Sensational Surya!

What a way to get to his century, his second IPL hundred and sixth in T20 cricket. Bends low, makes room and lofts Natarajan inside out over covers with the ball sailing into the crowd. The six also helped Mumbai ace the 174-chase with 16 balls to spare. Surya finishes with 102 off 51 balls, his innings laced with 12 fours and six sixes. He's added 143 runs with Tilak Varma in 13.1 overs to get the job done. The win has also lifted Mumbai from the bottom of the points table to ninth. Small joys in what has been a tough campaign for Mumbai.

Suryakumar vs Jansen: a one-way street

Another few good overs for SRH, but both Surya and Tilak went after Nitish Kumar Reddy to break the shackles. And then came Surya's assault against Jansen. It was as if he flicked a switch and there he was clearing the boundaries with ease. Twice he went over mid-off and reached his fifty off 30 balls. But, there was also the case of Surya limping a touch. He was stretching in between overs, and not running at full throttle. Every Indian fan would hope all's well with Surya.

Surya in the house

First two overs: 27 for 1
Overs three to five: 9 for 2
Overs six and seven: 38 for 0
After three overs in which only nine runs were scored, Suryakumar says enough is enough as he goes after the SRH bowlers. Tilak first cracks Cummins through covers before Suryakumar collects a six and four in the same over before Marco Jansen is picked for 4, 4, 6. The Supla came out more than once as Suryakumar from 4 off 7 to 32 off 14 in no time. Tilak also held his own as Mumbai got back into the game.

Is this a T20 or a Test?

What ball have SRH picked? Whichever one they have, they'd like to keep doing that again and again. Because the ball is swinging miles, and there is not much Mumbai have been able to do. The Test match lengths, that's what reaped rewards for SRH, and when it's a Test we are talking about, we can't keep the Australia Test captain out of the action, yeah. Cummins comes one and includes a leading edge off Rohit's blade that goes straight up for Klassen to come around and take a catch. The over translates into a wicket-maiden for Cummins, following which Bhuvneshwar gets rid of Naman Dhir at first slip.
Mumbai failed to score a single run off the bat for 20 balls between overs 1.3 to 4.4, and lost three wickets.

Extras, a wicket and more extras!

There is movement for both Bhuvneshwar and Jansen but both bowlers haven’t been able to control the swing. Bhuvneshwar gets the first two balls on the pad and is punished. Ishan Kishan flicks him through square leg first and then gets four leg-byes to fine leg. Marco Jansen also is too leg side and is duly picked away as Mumbai race to 26 after nine balls, of which 13 are extras. And then out of nowhere Jansen gets the ball spot on, seaming on off stump and gets Ishan Kishan to edge through to first slip.

What went right for MI?

Here's Vishal Dikshit from the venue: Piyush Chawla kept the spinner’s flag flying high for the second season in a row in a team that was being seen without a big-ticket spinner if they wanted to go for the title or the playoffs. And he’s done it for the second game in a row at Wankhede, where the pitches are largely flat and boundaries always short. He started with the big wicket of Head by placing three in the deep on the leg side for the big sweep and nearly snared Klaasen first ball with a delicious googly, before getting him in the same fashion in his second over. And suddenly, after Chawla had two wickets in seven balls, the tide had turned for MI. As Chawla strangled from one end with his loopy legbreaks under 90kmh and a slip in place, the top edges were falling in the right places, the fielders were holding on to the catches, there were no no-balls when the stumps were being shattered and the fans were loving the sight of the bails flying around. Chawla finished with 3 for 33 to follow his economical 1 for 15 against KKR, and this time the fans at Wankhede will hope it gives them two points.

Hardik, the bowler coming back into form

The Mumbai bowlers have been on point today, and the best thing for them will be that their captain is back in form. He first got rid of Nitish Reddy, and now comes in after the strategic timeout and takes two in an over. First sends back Shahbaz with a fuller length ball on the pads that he can only top-edge to long on running in, before cleaning up Marco Jansen with that hard length ball that clatters into leg stump. Hardik has predominantly bowled the hard length today. Thirteen of his 24 balls have been either short or short of a good length and he reaped the rewards. Chawla also gets his third then with a googly trapping Abdul Samad in front. SRH have had to bring in Sanvir Singh as an impact sub.
Bumrah finishes off his spell with 1 for 23 with another superb 19th over.

The wheel is turning...

...and it's turning in SRH's direction. After being luckless for so long in the powerplay, the wickets are falling in a heap. Piyush Chawla comes on and immediately gets rid of Travis Head. It was a slog sweep that brought about his downfall which he timed to perfection but hit straight down deep backward square leg's throat. Four balls later, Nitish Kumar Reddy is undone by a back-of-a-length Hardik Pandya ball that he top-edged with Kamboj taking a comfortable catch. Chawla then cleaned up Heinrich Klaasen for 2 as SRH slipped from 90 for 2 to 96 for 5.

Anshul gets his maiden IPL wicket....finally!

Travis Head is living a charmed life out there. He goes for another slog, but gets an outside edge that flies to deep point where Nuwan Thushara shells a relatively simple chance. But Kamboj finally has some luck going his way when Mayank Agarwal backs away, misses and sees his stumps in a mess. He immediately looks back at the umpire, but he was okay there. Head keeps going, but SRH have been relatively kept quiet.

Bumrah's magic in MI's powerplay of woe

Here's Vishal Diskhit from the venue: That powerplay pretty much summed up MI’s season because almost nothing went their way despite not doing everything wrong. Head’s inside edges were racing away for boundaries, Thushara nearly got him with a peach of an inswinger, Thushara also misfielded to leak a boundary, and when the debutant Anshul Kamboj shattered Head’s stumps, it emerged that he had overstepped. The crowd here at the Wankhede had hopes even after the umpire had signalled for a free hit and kept the flags waving. But most of the seats felt the bums again when on the next ball also Kamboj had overstepped. Then, as usual, came Bumrah, like he was swimming against the tide and gave the fans in blue some respite when he broke the opening partnership just at the end of the powerplay. It may not mean much yet because the rest of the MI attack needs to rally around him, but Bumrah had done his job again in his first two overs.

Who else but Bumrah

It's always him, isn't he? Gets rid of the dangerous Abhishek Sharma, who just doesn't look his usual self. He gets a second over in the powerplay, probably because of the kind of start SRH have got. He concedes a four first ball courtesy of a midfield at short third, but comes back superbly. Two dots and gets Abhishek Sharma to edge through to Ishan Kishan who flies to his left.

Kamboj gets Head...almost

Jasprit Bumrah does Jasprit Bumrah things conceding just four singles in the fourth over. Travis Head breaks the shackles by smashing Anshul Kamboj deep over midwicket. But the youngster comes back and flattens Head's offstump....but his joy is short-lived because he's over-stepped. What an anticlimax. Head launches the free-hit over mid-on, which turns out to be another no-ball. The next free-hit is again lifted over mid-on. What should have been an over where Kamboj got his maiden IPL wicket, turns out to be one where he conceded 19.
SRH are away with 51 in five overs.

Plenty happening in the first two overs

Two reviews for wides, one burnt, one overturned, an inside-edge past leg stump for four. The first over of the MI-SRH clash wasn't as action-packed but was entertaining nevertheless. The good thing was there was some swing for Nuwan Thushara. Anshul Kamboj shares the new ball and immediately gets the ball to move around. Beats Abhishek Sharma's outside edge third ball of the over but the batter has his response ready. Stands tall and swings a back of a length ball over covers. Head ended the first over with an inside-edge past leg stump for four, he ends the second over with an inside-edge past leg stump for four.

Who is Anshul Kamboj?

Kamboj is a 23-year-old allrounder from Haryana who bowls right-arm medium pace. Hailing from Karnal, Anshul has represented the India U-19 team in the past. He's the second Indian player to debut for Mumbai Indians this IPL after Naman Dhir. He took 17 wickets in just ten matches in the most recent edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Toss time: Mumbai bowl first

Just a one change for Mumbai, who have Anshul Kamboj making his IPL debut tonight with Gerald Coetzee out. For SRH, Mayank Agarwal is back into the side and will bat at No. 3.
"Dew is a factor, so another opportunity tonight. We have got four games, probably need to win two of them. Can't look too far ahead. Wankhede is always a good place to play," says Pat Cummins at the toss.
Hardik Pandya feels the new ball might do a bit early and that it's all about playing for pride and the badge.

What's happening at Wankhede?

Vishal Dikshit, who is our eyes and ears at the venue tells us that Rohit Sharma, who was the Impact Player in MI's last game trained for two days in a row and looks good from the press box as he goes through his stretching routines, although there may not be any harm in again using him as an Impact Player, given MI's campaign and the T20 World Cup is around the corner. Bumrah missed the nets session yesterday, but he's out there today and sending down deliveries on the square pitch.

Hey, ho let’s go!

The last time Sunrisers Hyderabad [SRH] and Mumbai Indians [MI] met, the ball flew in the night sky, records fell like nine pins, and the SRH batters announced to the world that they were here to rule. It was the match that turned IPL 2024 into IPL 2024, one where SRH raised the ceiling crash, bang and wallop to post 277 for 3, the then-highest score in the IPL. Mumbai, for the longest time, were in the chase but could only reach 246 for 5. So, what’s we got in store today?
Sixes, a lot of them is the likely answer. The two teams are meeting at Wankhede Stadium. No other venue has had more sixes being hit than Wankhede and it’s unlikely that trend is going to change. The pitch as usual looks a belter, so yeah, watch out for some fireworks. Travis Head had in one of the interviews said it’s time to have ‘3’ in front of the score. Could today be the day?
SRH are currently placed fourth on the table with 12 points, but there are three more teams on 12, so they will dearly hope to get out of that mid-table muddle and move to third. Mumbai, well, by the end of the day we’ll know if they are out of the reckoning for the playoffs spot or are still hanging on (just). They are placed 10th on the points table, with three wins and eight losses. Here’s Karthik Krishnaswamy with his preview.
